The story - in part: Molotov remix was made between 12:00 - 2:30 on 03/05/04 in response to a call for "Joywar" among Rhizome.org users after artist Joy Garnett was threatened with a law suit by a photographer who holds copyright to the photograph that served as a model for Garnett's painting Molotov. see the full Rhizome thread here http://rhizome.org/thread.rhiz?thread=12168&text=23419#23419 Hear Joy talk about sampled media and copyright as well as "Joywar" as part of Columbia University's Art & Technology Lectures. Molotov remix consists of a reproduction of Joy Garnett's painting sliced into 121 43px X 52px images. Each table cell is randomly loaded with one of 121 images. Users may click on either the "recompose" or "automate" links to manually or automatically generate new compositions. The chances of users hitting upon a perfect realignment of image slices is less than winning the lottery, but just in case i have a "fair use" argument ready. |
